Act II : Issue 2

A Residency and Experiment: Turning Moye Magazine into a Physical and Temporal Zine

Moyé Magazine is finally taking up physical space. And we invite you to experience it.

For a short residency, Moye Magazine is taking over The Point of Order (TPO) in Johannesburg, and as the Editor-in-Chief, I’m exploring how a zine can adapt from the page into a physical and communal experience. We’re transforming TPO into a living, breathing zine

The Experiment: How Can a Zine Exist as a Space?
This residency is a deep dive into how a zine, with all its unique conventions and qualities, can become a physical and temporal experience. I am  asking:

What magazine/zine conventions stay and what is left behind when we adapt a book into a physical form?

How do we maintain the essence of Moye’s zine conventions while adapting it into a space people can move through and interact with?

How do you page through a space?

How does a playlist translate from a written listicle to something we can all experience?

How can reading become a communal activity?

Within content curation: What lines blur the roles of a magazine editor and exhibition curator?

From Monday to Thursday, we’ll be working on the space, turning it into a zine through an open studio format. This process is an invitation for the community to witness and contribute as the space gradually becomes Act II: Issue 2.

What's Happening Throughout the Week?

  • Workshops & Events: We’ll host sessions from the Wits Writers Group workshop, and a sticker-making zine jam.

  • Final Night Celebration: On the final night, we’ll unveil the completed “physical zine” with food, drinks, and an open mic. We’re inviting other zine creators to showcase and sell their work too.

This residency is an open studio, where I, as the Editor-in-Chief, will be working and experimenting in real-time. We welcome everyone to drop in, contribute, or simply observe how a zine can transform into a shared, lived experience.

Act II: Issue 3

Our second print issue has been in the works for 2years. The aim is to create a zine that deviates from the first issue in aesthetic, curation and content in order to adapt to the new subject matter, changes in Moye with the notable difference between magazine and zine publication.

How can we turn the cinematic into a publication?

Act II: Issue 4

Instead of capturing the video submissions we recieved as still within the print zine - we currate them as a zine show. How does a zine adapt to the screen?
